DIY repairs on pieces of great financial or sentimental value are a definite no-no, for all the obvious reasons (the mangled family heirloom, the Super Glued bracelet that won't come off your wrist). But some simple repairs and maintenance really can be done at home, according to David Phelps, owner of John David Jewelers in Durham, N.C. And, with any luck, you won't even have to run out to the store to get started. "Just plain old household stuff is the best thing in the world (for this)," Phelps says.
