Black Friday a boon or a bust?

Lavish Thanksgiving feasts often cause the loosening of belts as people gather with friends and family to give thanks.

In recent years, however, holiday shoppers have cinched their belts back up and guarded their wallets before getting in line for Black Friday door-buster sales.

As Thanksgiving weekend came to a close this year, nationwide retailers reported more shoppers and spending than in recent years - but local retailers across Brookfield report mixed results.

The National Retail Federation found that 226 million shoppers visited stores and websites, spending an average of $398 per person, over Black Friday weekend; up from $365 in spending averaged by 212 million shoppers last year.

The $54.4 billion in total sales over the weekend is the highest on record, according to the NRF survey.

Filling a niche helps

Still, local business owners' descriptions of weekend sales range from flat to fantastic.

Mary Lewis, co-owner of Learning Express, opened a location in Brookfield Square Mall in the last year and received a warm reception over the weekend.
