Op Shop: Op shopping doesn't cost a lot – you can often pick up things for a few dollars. While it does take a bit of patience and hunting about, it's very rewarding when you discover a treasure.

Vintage: Clothing from years gone by can be of beautiful quality and very individual. Hunt about and you can often scoop up big name brands as well.

Make: Handy with the sewing machine? Why not make your clothes? There are plenty of tutorials on the internet for making looks directly off the runway.

Customise: Adding embellishments and details to a cheap piece of clothing can make it look very expensive. Pick up embellishments from Spotlight or other fabric stores, and in less than an hour you can have a new garment. Try beads, iron-on patches, braid, bows, buttons, trims or studs.

Swaps: Arrange a clothes-swapping event with your friends. Everybody has clothing in their wardrobe they no longer wear, and it's one of the easiest ways to get something for free.

To make your belt fit you, simply take the ratio of my waist measurement and the measurements below and multiply it by the measurement of your waist. Place tick marks where you want the elastic to be seperated (so, divide the height of the belt in half, then half again for fourths). You can either make a ruched, elasticized best or a ruffly (also elastic) belt....
