Think 'outside the frame' this season

That comes from Maplewood fine art photographer and photo journalist Joy Yagid, who can rattle off dozens of ideas for photographic gifts beyond framed pictures. And in these days when nearly every personal electronic device has a camera, all those images can be put to good use for holiday giving.

“Slipping a photo into frame is easy,” Yagid says. How about making a frame from photos? “Wide, unfinished wood frames can be collaged with images from things the gift recipient likes,” she says. Craft stores can supply the frame as well as advice on the adhesives and finishes to best create and protect the project. An easier idea: “Don’t give one photo, give five or six in smaller frames that in themselves become a work of art.”

But before you get started, consider how you will make your hobby gift not only interesting, but meaningful to the recipient. Yagid’s first photo-related gift was a scrapbook-like photo album she assembled for her mother from school photos of herself and her two brothers. She included their letters home from camp and other mementos her mom had tucked away for safekeeping. In the years since, Yagid has come up with lots of ways to keep her photo gifts fresh.
