Some of the fall 2012 collections make you wonder what these
designers have been up to since September. Fashion is ultimately
the art of covering up nudity, so it's inherently a little
provocative.
At Saturday's Alexander Wang, he covered most of his model's
mouths with fabric. Turtlenecks in net-like knits and tulle had
been unfurled and extended over the lips.
It was a visual conundrum. The looks were tough, dark and
strong, but the impression of anyone walking with their mouth
covered conjures repression, domination and the like.
The same goes for Tommy Hilfiger's interesting collar choice at
the runway showing of his women's collection Sunday night.
He held his presentation at the Park Avenue Armory with the same
set as his men's show -- a surprising indoor recreation of the
courtyard of a private military cadet academy. But because the
women's show has a much-higher attendance than the men's show, he
switched out cafe tables for park benches and added extra rows.
