Mobile City Council members say cuts are the mayor's responsibility

MOBILE, Alabama -- With his suggested tax increase appearing scuttled, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones has a question for those City Council members who oppose it.

"How do you propose we solve this problem? Show me how you think we can come up with that money," he said.

The Press-Register posed that question to the four council members who have publicly stated their intention to vote against the tax. None gave a specific plan, although some offered general ideas.

Two of them said that it’s the mayor’s responsibility as the chief administrator to find spending cuts.

The Jones administration projects a budget shortfall of about $25.7 million in 2013, due primarily to rising health care and pension costs and stagnant revenue.

He has urged renewing a 1-percentage point increase in the city’s sales tax to close the gap. That would boost the city’s sales tax rate from 4 percent to 5 percent and the total sales tax rate, including state and county levies, from 9 percent to 10 percent.
