Nelson jewellery artist Nicole Bigg figures she must have absorbed some deep love of pattern and colour as a child whose oil-industry father moved her family around Africa and then Saudi Arabia and Dubai. She never lost that travel bug, and in recent years has spent time everywhere from Mexico and India to Japan, Korea, and Thailand.

That global influence definitely weaves its way into her intricate creations, which play delicate, acid-etched patterns onto geometric shards of metal. She hand-cuts each piece and oxidizes her creations so the motifs turn black against their glimmering gold or silver backgrounds.

“I use a lot of Asian-style patterns, like Chinese and Japanese flowers,” she says of pieces in the line that resemble cherry-blossom brocades. There are also birds and leafy prints and patterns reminiscent of Middle Eastern mosaics. (Prices range from about $32 for small earrings, up to $50 or $60 for necklaces, and as far up as $330 for elaborate buckles embedded with coloured stones she sources from Phoenix, Arizona. Look for little etched, metal jewellery boxes and wall pieces too.
