GACA North-South All-Star Football Classic: Carver DB Deion Bonner bids ...

The North won for the second straight season, but the South still leads 35-33 in the series, which dates back to 1939.

Marion County’s Wayne Johnson and Tavarois Bryant played on the South team.

The North’s defense controlled the game, giving up just 119 yards of total offense to the South. The South’s running backs managed only 64 yards on 28 carries. On its six possessions in the second half, the South had three turnovers, two punts and turned over the ball on downs once.

“We disguised our coverages well,” said Bonner, who is considering Alabama, LSU, Miami and Arkansas, among others. “We made it seem like we were in a (cover) 3, but we really were in a (cover) 2. We baited them into throwing short passes, and we were able to jump their routes.”

Neither team mustered much offense in the first half, with Pierce County’s Jake Walker making a 22-yard field goal with 6:26 to go in the second quarter to give the South a 3-0 lead. However, the North came back and took advantage of a short punt to get on the board before halftime. Flowery Branch quarterback Kanler Coker directed a seven-play, 39-yard scoring drive that he capped off with a 5-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds remaining in the half. Cartersville’s Collin Barber -- who averaged 48 yards on five punts, including an 80-yarder -- made the extra point to give the North a 7-3 lead.
